Valheim Buying Guide — Which Version and Where to Buy

What you are buying

Valheim is a standalone co-op survival game. There is one base game — no seasonal pass, no pay-to-win microtransactions. Once bought, all content updates (including the 1.0 release and its biome) are free.

Where to buy

• Steam — the original and largest platform (Windows, macOS and Linux); the reference version for this guide, and where the modding and dedicated-server ecosystem lives.
• Xbox / Microsoft Store — available on Xbox consoles and Windows PC; the Microsoft Store PC copy and the Xbox copy share one entitlement.
• PlayStation 5 — released at 1.0, adding cross-platform play with the other platforms.
• Nintendo Switch 2 — released at 1.0.
• Mac App Store — a separate Mac storefront in addition to Steam.
• Humble — also sells the PC version.

Valheim is not currently on Game Pass. It was on Xbox/PC Game Pass during early access but left the service on September 30, 2024, and that deal was not renewed for 1.0.

Regional pricing and store availability change over time. Always confirm the current listing on your platform’s store before purchasing.

Which version is right for you

• Playing with friends on different platforms? Any 1.0 storefront works for crossplay — the key is that everyone is on the same game version and crossplay is enabled on the host.
• Mods and community servers? Steam offers the most mature modding and dedicated-server tooling.

About the 1.0 release

Valheim spent several years in early access and left it with the 1.0 update, which added the Deep North biome and its endgame content. Early-access buyers received 1.0 for free — there is no separate “complete edition” to upgrade to.
