Valheim Meadows Guide — Spawn, First Tools, Base Building and Eikthyr
The full Meadows guide for Valheim 1.0: your first 30 minutes from spawn to Flint tools, why clearing Greydwarves before building is non-negotiable, how to hunt Deer and Boar efficiently, summon Eikthyr with 2 Deer Trophies, and prepare for the Black Forest.

The Meadows is the only forgiving biome — use it well
Every Viking spawns in the Meadows. Open grasslands, low-stakes enemies, and zero environmental debuffs. This is Valheim on easy mode — deliberately so. You are supposed to use the Meadows to learn the controls, build your first workbench, and kill your first boss before stepping into the Black Forest where the game actually starts.

Your first 10 minutes — Flint tools and a workbench
You spawn with nothing. Your character has no weapon, no tool, no torch. Here is the fastest path:
Minute 0-1: Punch trees for Wood
Punch any tree with your bare fists. You need 2 Wood for a Campfire and 10 Wood for a Workbench. Resin sometimes drops from trees — collect it too (it torches).
Minute 1-2: Pick up Stone and Flint
- Stone: pick up loose grey rocks on the ground near your spawn. You need 5 Stone for a Campfire.
- Flint: walk to the nearest water edge. Flint are small flat grey rocks only at river/lake/ocean edges. Pick up 6 Flint.
Minute 2-5: Craft Campfire + Workbench + Flint tools
Open the Hammer (right-click, or press 3 on the hotbar). You see everything you can craft with your current inventory.
- Place Campfire (2 Wood + 5 Stone) on flat ground. It cooks meat and unlocks food recipes.
- Place Workbench (10 Wood) near the Campfire. This is your crafting hub for everything.
- At the Workbench, craft:
- Flint Axe (4 Wood + 6 Flint) — chops Wood much faster than fists
- Flint Spear (5 Wood + 10 Flint + 2 Leather Scraps) — your first real weapon
- Wooden Shield (4 Wood + 1 Resin) — blocks Greyling and Boar attacks
Minute 5-10: Kill 1-2 Boar and 1 Deer
Hunt for meat and trophies:
- Boar (brown pigs): 3-4 hits with Flint Spear. Drop Boar Meat (food) and Boar Trophy (decorative). They run from you at first — sneak up behind them.
- Deer (spotted): faster and skittish. Crouch (Ctrl) and approach slowly, or use the Flint Spear’s throw mode (hold right-click). Drop Deer Meat and Deer Trophy (you need 2 of these for Eikthyr).
Cook meat on the Campfire — Cooked Deer Meat gives 35 health + 12 stamina for 20 minutes, which is your food for the first hour.
The most important rule: clear a 20x20 patch before building
Greydwarves spawn from un-cleared ground. If you build your base in a forest of tall grass, flowers, and rocks, Greydwarves will spawn there every night and attack your Workbench. This is the #1 reason new players quit Valheim on day 1.
How to do it right:
- Find a flat spot with:
- A clear line of sight (away from dense pine forests)
- Near water (Flint, easy access to Black Forest by boat later)
- Near some Birch and Oak trees (you need Finewood later for portals)
- Use the Flint Axe to clear every tree, bush, flower, and tall grass in a 20x20 area. Do not leave anything small.
- The area should look like a freshly mown lawn. Now place your Workbench and Campfire in the centre.
Why this works
The Workbench’s build radius creates a “clean zone” where no enemies spawn. But the radius only extends so far — if you leave tall grass 10 feet from your wall, Greydwarves will still spawn from that grass and walk in. 20x20 is safe.
The shelter and bed
After the Workbench:
- Craft a Bed (8 Wood + 10 Resin). Place it inside a shelter with a roof.
- Set your spawn point by sleeping once (press E on the Bed).
- Build a 3-4 wall shelter around the Bed. A basic wooden wall roofed with wood works — do not overbuild yet.
You respawn at this Bed every time you die. If your Bed is in a Greydwarf-infested area, you die → spawn in the middle of enemies → die again. The 20x20 cleared patch prevents this.
Deer hunting — the trophy drop and Eikthyr
Eikthyr is the first Forsaken boss. You need 2 Deer Trophies to summon it. Trophy drop rate from Deer is random — about 50% per Deer.
Efficient deer hunting:
- Crouch (Ctrl) to reduce detection radius
- Equip the Flint Spear
- Aim at the deer’s body (not head — head is harder to hit)
- Throw the spear (right-click hold) for ranged damage, or close the gap and stab
- Deer run fast — chase them if wounded, they will stop after 10-15 seconds
Kill 4-6 Deer and you will have 2 trophies. Do not spend 2 hours chasing Deer — if you have 4 trophies, stop and go to the altar.
Eikthyr — the first boss fight
Eikthyr’s altar (the “Mystical Altar”) is always on your starter continent. Look for a circle of 5-6 stone pillars with a deer antler rune carved into the ground in the centre.
How to summon
Pick up the Deer Trophies from your inventory and place them on the two Offer Stones beside the circle. Eikthyr spawns from the sky — a 10-foot-tall antlered deer.
Eikthyr’s attack patterns
- Antler bash: charges at you, telegraphed by head lowering. Dodge left or right.
- Lightning bolt: Eikthyr rears back and channels lightning. The bolt hits where you were — keep moving.
- Stomp: AOE shockwave when it lands after a charge. Stay away from the legs.
Recommended gear
Flint Spear + Wooden Shield + 2-3 Cooked Deer Meat + 1 Cooked Boar Meat. That is it. You do not need better gear.
The trick
Eikthyr is slow. You can circle around it with the Flint Spear and stab the back when it charges. The Wooden Shield blocks most antler damage. This fight is about patience, not damage.
Drop: Hard Antler + Eikthyr Trophy
Hard Antler is used to craft the Antler Pickaxe (1 Hard Antler + 10 Wood at a Workbench) — this is what mines Copper and Tin in the Black Forest. Without it, you cannot progress past the Meadows.
Eikthyr Trophy goes on the Sacrificial Stones back at your base. Activating it gives the Antler Forsaken Power — 60% reduced stamina usage for running, jumping and swimming (for 300 seconds). Use this when you are exploring the Black Forest or sailing.
Swamp Key does NOT drop here
That is The Elder’s drop (Black Forest boss). Do not get confused.
Before you leave the Meadows
- Antler Pickaxe crafted and in your inventory
- Bronze Axe resource prepped — you need Finewood for portals later, but Bronze Axe requires Copper + Tin which comes from Black Forest. Make a note: first thing in Black Forest is mine Copper + Tin → smelt Bronze → craft Bronze Axe.
- 10 Finewood gathered if you can chop Birch/Oak with a Flint Axe? No — Flint Axe does NOT drop Finewood. You need Bronze Axe for Finewood. Remember this.
- Longship or Raft built — you need a boat to reach the Black Forest. Raft works for short distances, Karve after Bronze.
The no-Flint-Axe-Finewood trap: Flint Axe chops Birch and Oak trees but only drops Regular Wood, not Finewood. Finewood requires Bronze Axe. This means you cannot craft a portal pair before reaching Bronze tier — which locks you into the Meadows → Black Forest progression. This is intentional design.
The six mistakes that get new players stuck in the Meadows
1. Building on un-cleared ground
Greydwarves spawn from tall grass and rocks. Clear 20x20 before placing the Workbench.
2. No Bed / no spawn point
If you die without setting a Bed, you respawn at the world spawn — which could be 5 minutes from your base. Always craft a Bed after the Workbench.
3. Wasting time chopping everything with fists
Flint Axe is 4 Wood + 6 Flint. It drops in 2 minutes and cuts Wood 3x faster. Punching trees is for the first minute only.
4. Spending 2 hours building a fancy base
You are going to move to the Black Forest and then to the Swamp. The Meadows base is a staging area, not a permanent home. Simple shelter + Workbench + Campfire + Bed is enough.
5. Forgetting that Flint Axe does not give Finewood
Finewood = Bronze Axe only. Do not walk around the Meadows chopping Birch trees expecting Finewood — you will waste 10 minutes and get nothing.
6. Going into the Black Forest without Antler Pickaxe
The Black Forest looks tempting — tall pines, resources everywhere. But Copper and Tin need Antler Pickaxe. Eikthyr → Antler Pickaxe → Black Forest is the mandatory chain.

Frequently asked questions
- How long should I spend in the Meadows?
- Most players kill Eikthyr in 30-45 minutes on a first playthrough. Spend 10-15 minutes gathering Wood/Stone/Flint/Deer/Boar → 5 minutes building a Workbench and shelter → 10-20 minutes hunting Deer for 2 trophies → summon and kill Eikthyr. Stay longer only if you want to pre-farm food or build a more permanent base.
- Why are Greydwarves spawning in my base at night?
- Greydwarves spawn from un-cleared ground. When you place a Workbench, it creates a build radius that marks a clean area — but the ground *around* it still spawns Greydwarves if you do not clear the terrain. Clear a 20x20 flat patch *before* you build, and remove any grass tufts, flowers, and small rocks inside that area. If Greydwarves still spawn, you did not clear wide enough.
- Where do I find flint?
- Flint is grey rocks that only spawn at or near water edges — rivers, lakeshores, and ocean coasts. They are easy to spot: small (about the size of a fist), flat, and grey. Pick them up with E. You need 16 Flint total for a Flint Axe (6) + Flint Spear (10) + Wooden Shield (0).
- How many Deer Trophies do I need for Eikthyr?
- Two. Iron Gate confirmed this at launch. Some older guides incorrectly list 5 — ignore those. Kill Deer (1-2 trophies each, random drop), bring 2 to the Mystical Altar, place them on the Offer Stones, and Eikthyr spawns.
