Valheim Beginner Guide — Your First 10 Hours
A no-spoiler starter path for Valheim 1.0: your first base, tools and food, how the stamina-and-comfort systems work, and the order to tackle the biomes.

Welcome to Valheim
Valheim does not hand you a quest log. Progression is driven by the Forsaken bosses: each one you defeat drops a key item and unlocks the next biome. This guide gives you the first ten hours in the right order so you never feel lost.
Your first priorities in the Meadows
- Punch trees and pick up branches for your first wood, and grab loose stone.
- Build a workbench and cover it with a roof — a workbench only functions when sheltered.
- Craft a stone axe and a club, then make a simple lean-to or timber hut so you get the Rested bonus and can sleep.
- Hunt deer and boar for meat and leather scraps; cook raw meat on a fire (never eat it raw — it can damage you).
- Collect flint along shorelines for your first proper tools and a crude knife.
Understand these three systems early
- Food: three food slots, each with its own health and stamina contribution. Eat a variety before a fight, not three of the same thing.
- Stamina: sprinting, jumping, blocking and swinging all drain it. Rest and food restore it — this is why a sheltered base near your target matters.
- Comfort: sitting by a fire under a roof grants Rested, which massively boosts stamina regeneration. Build small outposts as you explore.
The order to tackle the game
Each biome gates the next through its boss:
- Meadows → defeat Eikthyr for the pickaxe.
- Black Forest → mine copper and tin, defeat The Elder for the Swamp Key.
- Swamp → gather iron, defeat Bonemass for the Wishbone.
- Mountain → find silver, defeat Moder.
- Plains → defeat Yagluth.
The full biome-by-biome route lives in the progression channel.
Common beginner mistakes
- Building your first base deep in the Black Forest — start in the Meadows and relocate once you have a boat.
- Ignoring food variety and fighting bosses on a single meal type.
- Mining without a pickaxe upgrade, then running out of durability mid-expedition.
- Forgetting that a workbench and a forge both need a roof to function (a forge also needs a nearby fire).
