Valheim Boss Preparation Checklist — What to Bring to Every Boss Fight

A pre-boss checklist you can run through before any Forsaken fight — summon offering, resistance source, damage-type match, food loadout and Forsaken Power, with a row for every boss from Eikthyr to Kall Fimbulbringer.

The 5 things every boss fight needs

Before you summon any Forsaken, run this checklist:

  1. The offering — the exact item and count to light the altar.
  2. Resistance — the elemental or hazard protection the biome demands before the fight starts.
  3. Damage-type match — the weapon that hits hardest (weakness) and what you should leave at camp (resistances / immunities).
  4. Food loadout — three distinct meals that fill health/stamina/eitr before the fight, plus any meads.
  5. Forsaken Power choice — the buff that matches the boss and biome, activated before summoning.

Note: Fader and The Queen summoning and resistance profiles are now confirmed for 1.0. Kall Fimbulbringer (Deep North) is included as row 8; he has no Forsaken Power (he drops Sacrificial Blood instead), so his ⑤ cell says to bring a tanky power such as Bonemass. See our verification workflow.

Per-boss preparation table

# Boss ① Summon offering ② Resistance to bring ③ Weapon to use (leave this at camp) ④ Food & meads ⑤ Best Forsaken Power
1 Eikthyr 2× Deer Trophy None needed Club / blunt (leave fire, ice on fire) Meadows food (grilled meat, berries), Minor healing mead Antler — reduced stamina for running around charges
2 The Elder 3× Ancient Seed None notable Fire arrows or bronze mace (leave pierce at camp — heavily resisted) Bronze-tier food, Minor healing + stamina Elder — chopping/pickaxe damage + faster health regen
3 Bonemass 10× Withered Bone Poison resistance mead — mandatory Mace / blunt (leave pierce, fire, poison at camp — immune to poison) High-health Swamp meals, Medium healing Bonemass Power — pierce/slash/blunt resistance + free blocking
4 Moder 3× Dragon Egg Frost resistance (cape or Wolf armor) before you climb Fire bow / fire weapon (leave frost arrows at camp — immune to frost) High-stamina Mountain meals, Medium healing + stamina Moder — tailwind for the Plains sail + frost resistance if you still need it
5 Yagluth 5× Fuling Totem Fire resistance (fire mead + cape) for meteor phase Blunt or Slash (no real weakness; leave pierce — quarter damage — and fire — half damage — at camp; immune to poison) Plains meals, Major healing + Medium stamina Yagluth — lightning resistance + damage boost, situational
6 The Queen Sealbreaker in Infested Citadel (then 3× Seeker Soldier Trophy to re-fight) Wisplight — the real gate to even reach the fight Blunt/Slash — your best late-game weapon tier (resistant to pierce, immune to spirit) Mistlands eitr/health meals, Major healing + Major stamina Queen — doubled eitr regen + poison resistance
7 Fader 3× Bell at a coliseum (Vegvisir in the Charred Fortress) Fire resistance (cape + mead + Fenris set) Blunt/Slash weapon (resistant to pierce, immune to fire/spirit) Ashlands meals, Major healing + Major stamina Fader — Adrenaline + fire resistance
8 Kall Fimbulbringer 3× Malicious Blood at the Aesir Passage (Jotun invasions) Fire + Frost resistance (his attacks are fire and frost) Blunt/Slash (Nord Sledge/Greatsword — leave elemental at camp, he resists it) Deep North meals (Seal Meat Soup, Smoked Moose Meat), Major healing + stamina No power — bring Bonemass for the long tanky fight (Kall drops no trophy)

The rules that catch new players

Always drink resistance meads before you need them

Drinking poison resistance mead after Bonemass has poisoned you does nothing — the DoT is already applied. Same for fire mead in the Ashlands and frost mead in the Mountains. Drink them when you enter the biome, not when you are already hurting.

Scout the arena surroundings before summoning

Fulings wandering into the Yagluth circle, a lox charging the Plains arena, draugr from the Swamp walking toward Bonemass — these are the easiest avoidable wipes. Pull aggro away, kill or lead them off before you place the offering.

One boss = one damage type match

Blunt works on Eikthyr and Bonemass. Fire works on The Elder and Moder. Yagluth has no real weakness — any physical damage lands at full value, but he is very resistant to pierce, so leave the bow behind. Frost slows everything but does nothing to Moder. Check the damage-type page if you are unsure: damage types guide.

  1. Leave the boss arena if you run out of food or meads. You can reset a boss fight by walking far enough away — use that. Running around with zero health regen and zero stamina meads is a death sentence; back off, resupply, return.
  2. Solo vs full group changes difficulty (scaling locks on first hit) — split roles accordingly, especially if your group is 4+: solo vs co-op boss difficulty.

Walkthrough of a full prep cycle

  1. Open the map → locate the boss altar → sail/march there.
  2. Before stepping into the biome proper → drink your resistance mead.
  3. Clear a safe perimeter around the altar.
  4. Swap to the right weapon for the boss’s weakness.
  5. Fill all three food slots with the best meals you have.
  6. Activate your chosen Forsaken Power.
  7. Place the offering → fight.

Frequently asked questions

Should I brew meads before summoning?
Yes — resistance meads (frost, fire, poison) are mandatory for Mountain, Swamp, Ashlands and half the Plains fights. Healing and stamina meads are how you survive long phases or an unexpected add. Drink them before you step into the boss arena, not during.
When should I drink my Forsaken Power?
Activate the power *right before* you summon. Bonemass's power makes blocking stamina-positive and is ideal for Bonemass and later bosses. Moder's power gives a tailwind while sailing (it lasts 300s) — activate it for the sea crossing to the next boss, not the fight itself. See [Forsaken Powers](/gear/forsaken-powers/).
Do I need to clear adds before summoning?
Almost always yes. Plains Fuling or lox walking into Yagluth's fight, Swamp draugr into Bonemass's arena, Mountain wolves into Moder's summit — all are avoidable wipes. Scout the area and pull aggro elsewhere before you summon.
