Why mead matters
Mead is Valheim’s consumable power layer — beyond food, beyond Forsaken Powers. It is how you bridge the gap between not being geared for a biome yet and surviving that biome:
- Resistance meads buy you time in the Mountains, Ashlands and Swamp before your cape or armor catches up.
- Healing and stamina meads turn a losing fight into a winning one if you bring the right ones.
- Eitr meads are the mage build’s bread and butter.
- Special meads (Tasty, Lightfoot, Berserkir) change how you move, jump or fight.
Confirmed mead values (valheim.wiki, 1.0)
Duration is how long the effect lasts; cooldown is how long before you can drink another mead in the same group. One fermented base yields 6 meads, except Berserkir (3).

How brewing works
- Place a Mead Ketill under a Campfire (it needs the fire directly below).
- Brew a mead base at the Ketill — each base mixes specific materials.
- Move the base to a Fermenter and wait two in-game days (about an hour of real time, or less if you sleep to skip nights).
- One base → six meads (except Berserkir → three).
You need Honey for almost every recipe. Build Beehives from Queen Bees dropped by abandoned hives (found in Meadows houses and Black Forest towers).
Every mead, grouped by role
Resistance meads (biome survival)
| Mead | Hazard it solves | When to drink it |
|---|---|---|
| Frost Resistance Mead | Mountain cold | Before climbing — the Mountain chews your health before Moder even appears. A Wolf Fur Cape is better long-term, but this mead gets you there. |
| Fire Resistance Barley Wine | Ashlands heat | Before entering the Ashlands. No cape is good enough in the early Ashlands — stack mead + cape + Fenris set for survivability. |
| Poison Resistance Mead | Swamp poison | Before the Swamp. Blobs, Oozers and leeches all poison you, and drinking this after you are poisoned does nothing — drink it first. |
Resistance meads share a 10-minute cooldown per type (you can drink fire + frost + poison meads together, but not two frost meads in a row).
Healing meads (same cooldown group)
| Mead | Role | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Minor Healing Mead | Early-game emergency | First Black Forest trip or first Troll — the cheapest health safety net. |
| Medium Healing Mead | Mid-game burst | After the Iron tier, for Swamp and Mountain fights. |
| Major Healing Mead | Late-game burst | Before Mistlands and Ashlands boss fights — the biggest instant heal. |
| Lingering Healing Mead | Regen over time | A steady heal instead of a big burst. Good for long fights where you can kite to safety. |
All four healing meads share a cooldown group — you cannot chug Major Healing followed by Minor Healing. Pick one tier to bring per trip.
Stamina meads (same cooldown group)
| Mead | Role | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Minor Stamina Mead | Early burst | First time chopping a lot of trees or mining ore — no stamina, no progress. |
| Medium Stamina Mead | Mid-game burst | Before boss fights where you will be blocking and swinging non-stop. |
| Lingering Stamina Mead | Slow regen | Long build sessions, mining runs or sailing — you do not need to chug repeatedly. |
| Tasty Mead | Trade stamina regen for reduced health regen | For dodge-heavy ranged builds that never let health drop. Not a general-purpose mead. |
All four stamina meads share a cooldown group.
Eitr meads (same cooldown group)
| Mead | Role | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Minor Eitr Mead | Mage emergency | Running out of eitr mid-boss fight — drink one and keep casting. |
| Lingering Eitr Mead | Mage regen | Longer-term eitr recovery during kiting or after a burst. |
Both eitr meads share a cooldown group. These meads do nothing useful until the Mistlands — you need a staff to spend eitr on.
Special meads
| Mead | Effect | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Lightfoot Mead | Lower jump stamina cost, higher jump height | Mistlands cliff navigation, kiting bosses across rough terrain. No cooldown. |
| Berserkir Mead | Cuts Attack, Block and Dodge stamina use by 80%, but makes you weak (×1.5) to Slash, Blunt and Pierce | A niche endgame option that rewards aggressive play; yields 3 per base instead of 6. |
Practical loadouts
- First Mountain trip: Frost resistance + Minor or Medium healing + Medium stamina.
- Swamp / Bonemass fight: Poison resistance + Medium healing + Medium stamina.
- Plains / Yagluth fight: Fire resistance mead (meteor phase) + Major healing + Medium stamina.
- Mistlands / The Queen: Lingering healing + Major healing + Lingering stamina + Minor or Lingering eitr.
- Ashlands / Fader: Fire resistance + Major healing + Major stamina.
Key rules before you go
- Drink resistance meads before the hazard. Drinking poison resistance after you are poisoned does nothing.
- Same cooldown group = no stacking. You cannot drink two healing meads back to back — pick one tier.
- Bring more than you think you need. One mead lasts one trip into a biome; boss fights and long exploration drain them fast.
- Honey is the bottleneck. Build three or more Beehives early — you will never have enough.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I make mead in Valheim?
- Two steps. First, brew a mead base at the Mead Ketill (which sits under a Campfire). Then ferment that base in the Fermenter for two in-game days (about an hour of real time, or less if you sleep to skip nights). One base fermented makes six meads, except Berserkir, which makes three.
- Which meads share a cooldown?
- Meads in the same group share an exclusion group. Healing meads, stamina meads and eitr meads each have their own group — you cannot drink two healing meads of any size back to back, but you can drink a healing one after a stamina one. Resistance meads, Lightfoot and Tasty each have their own cooldown.
- Does poison resistance mead work if I drink it after getting poisoned?
- No. Poison resistance only affects poison applied *after* you drink the mead. If you are already poisoned, drinking it does nothing to the existing DoT. Drink resistance meads *before* entering combat with the hazard you want to protect against.
