Valheim Shields & Blocking Guide — Buckler, Round, Tower and Parry Timing
How Valheim shields work — the three families (buckler, round, tower), blocking stamina cost, parry timing and the upgrade path from wood shield to flametal.

How blocking actually works
Blocking is not free and not passive:
- Blocking costs stamina. Every hit you absorb drains stamina; when you run out you cannot block and take full damage. Manage the stamina bar as carefully as your health bar.
- Block value decides how much a shield absorbs. Each shield has a block value; if an incoming hit exceeds what your shield can block plus your Blocking skill, the overflow reaches your health.
- Blocking is a skill. It levels by blocking hits and increases your effective block armor, which is why commitment to one shield pays off more than hopping tiers.
Verified (1.0): each level of the Blocking skill adds +0.5% block armor, reaching +50% at level 100 (valheim.wiki /w/Blocking_(skill), cross-checked with gamecore.wiki). You gain 0.5 XP per blocked hit and 1 XP per parry — even when the block fails. The block values and parry multipliers in the table below are confirmed against valheim.wiki (1.0) — see our verification workflow.
Confirmed shield values (valheim.wiki, 1.0)
Block armor is min/max; parry bonus is the multiplier applied to parry block armor. Tower shields cannot parry; while held, bucklers and round shields reduce movement speed by 5% and tower shields by 10%.
| Shield | Family | Block armor (min/max) | Parry bonus | Movement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood shield | Round | 6 / 18 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Wood tower shield | Tower | 10 / 22 | — (no parry) | −10% |
| Bronze buckler | Buckler | 16 / 28 | 2.5x | −5% |
| Banded shield | Round | 42 / 54 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Iron buckler | Buckler | 28 / 40 | 2.5x | −5% |
| Bone tower shield | Tower | 32 / 44 | — (no parry) | −10% |
| Iron tower shield | Tower | 52 / 64 | — (no parry) | −10% |
| Silver shield | Round | 60 / 72 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Serpent scale shield | Tower | 60 / 72 (resistant vs. Pierce) | — (no parry) | −10% |
| Black metal shield | Round | 78 / 90 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Carapace buckler | Buckler | 78 / 90 | 2.5x | −5% |
| Black metal tower shield | Tower | 104 / 116 | — (no parry) | −10% |
| Carapace shield | Round | 96 / 108 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Flametal shield | Round | 114 / 126 | 1.5x | −5% |
| Flametal tower shield | Tower | 140 / 152 | — (no parry) | −10% |
The three shield families
| Family | Best at | Trade-off | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buckler | Parry — the highest parry bonus and fastest recovery | Lowest raw block value | You want to parry for a stagger window and counter hard |
| Round | Balance — solid block with a usable parry | No standout strength | You want one dependable default for mixed fights |
| Tower | Raw block value — absorbs the heaviest hits | Slows your movement and cannot parry | You plan to tank slow heavy swings and boss hits head-on |
The practical decision is parry versus absorb. A buckler rewards precise timing with a stagger and a free damage window. A tower shield rewards simply standing your ground. Round shields do neither at the extreme and are the safe pick if you have not committed.
Parry timing
A parry is a block landed in the instant just before an attack connects — not a held guard. Nail the timing and you:
- Stagger the attacker, opening a window where it cannot act.
- Deal or set up bonus damage during that window.
- Reset faster than a full block, keeping you on the offensive.
Parry is a timing skill, not a stat check. Practice on slow greydwarf and skeleton swings before attempting it on bosses; only bucklers and round shields can parry, tower shields cannot.
Shield upgrade path
Shields follow the same material ladder as the rest of your gear:
Wood Shield → Bronze Buckler → Iron Buckler / Iron Tower → Silver Shield → Blackmetal Shield → Carapace Shield → Flametal tier
As always, upgrade the shield you already carry before crafting the next tier. Quality levels are gated by your crafting station level, so raising the Forge and its upgrade pieces matters as much as the ore you smelt. Which piece belongs to which station: workstations guide.
Pairing shields with a build
- Shield + club (blunt) is the durable, beginner-friendly core — and blunt is the answer to skeletons, blobs and Bonemass. Bonemass’s Forsaken Power makes this build extremely tanky.
- Tower shield + heavy hits suits trading blows with bosses that telegraph big swings.
- Buckler + fast weapon suits players who parry into counters and want mobility.
The stamina rhythm — block, spend, recover — is the same mechanic that governs attacking, so learn it once and it applies everywhere: combat basics.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best shield in Valheim?
- It depends on how you fight. For parrying, a buckler gives the biggest parry bonus and the fastest recovery. For soaking hits while you trade, a tower shield has the highest block value. Round shields sit in the middle and are the safe default. Tier matters less than the shield type matching your playstyle and your Blocking skill.
- Should I block or dodge?
- Blocking is safer against slow, heavy, telegraphed hits and lets you parry for a damage window. Dodging costs no shield durability and works when an attack is unblockable or too big to absorb. Most players block normal swings and dodge boss AoEs and heavy charges.
- Does the Blocking skill matter?
- Yes. Blocking is its own skill and it rises as you block hits. Higher Blocking increases your effective block armor, so a well-used lower-tier shield often out-performs a fresh craft you have no skill in.
