Valheim Workstations — Every Crafting Station and Its Upgrades

The two rules every station obeys

1. Stations need a roof. An uncovered Workbench, Forge or Cauldron will not function. This is why the first thing you build in any new outpost is a small roofed shed, not a hall.
2. Level gates quality. The quality you can craft and upgrade gear to is limited by the station’s level, and the level is raised by upgrade pieces built nearby — not by the station itself.

Upgrade pieces must be within range of the base station, and building two copies of the same piece does not raise the level twice.

Artisan Table — Artisan Press (5 Black marble + 5 Bronze + 1 Majestic carapace; max station level 2)

Workbench: Chopping Block (10 Wood + 10 Flint) → Tanning Rack (10 Wood + 15 Flint + 20 Leather scraps + 5 Deer hide) → Adze (10 Finewood + 3 Bronze) → Tool Shelf (10 Finewood + 4 Iron + 4 Obsidian). Layout that actually works

• One shed per station cluster, not one mega-base. Workbench plus Forge plus Cauldron under a shared roof, with chests in reach of all three — crafting pulls materials from nearby chests automatically.
• Upgrade pieces along the walls. They count when close to the station, so line the inside of the shed with them rather than scattering them across the yard.
• Smelter and charcoal kiln outside or vented. They produce smoke and fire; an enclosed room fills up and smoke damages you.
• Keep the forge near its support buildings. The Forge’s function depends on the smelter and kiln being close, so cluster them.
• Repair is free. Every station repairs its own item type at no cost, so there is no reason to run damaged gear or tools.

The order to level your stations

1. Workbench first, always. Build radius, repairs and every wood recipe depend on it. Add all four upgrade pieces as soon as you can afford them — it costs less than you think and unlocks quality upgrades for the whole run.
2. Forge in the Black Forest, immediately after your first bronze. The six upgrade pieces are the difference between quality-1 and quality-4 gear, and quality is worth more than a tier jump.
3. Cauldron beside your kitchen from the first day — food is part of your defense budget.
4. Artisan Table after Moder, then use it to unlock Spinning Wheel, Windmill, Blast Furnace and Stone Oven for linen, black metal and baked food.
5. Black Forge and Galdr Table in the Mistlands — the Black Forge is built from Mistlands materials (Yggdrasil wood, black marble, black cores) and crafts Mistlands and Ashlands-tier gear, so it is the endgame forge for both late biomes. Both stations gate the best gear in the game.
