Valheim Structural Integrity — Stability Colours, Material Strength and the Physics System
How Valheim structural integrity actually works: the stability colour system, which materials hold the most weight, why your roof collapses, and how to build tall without red pieces.

Every piece has a stability value, shown by colour
Valheim’s building system is a physics simulation, not a permission grid. Every piece you place has a stability value displayed in the build hammer UI as a colour:
- Blue — fully stable. No concerns.
- Green — slightly degraded but still perfectly functional.
- Yellow — getting weaker. The piece can still support things above it but you should avoid adding more weight here.
- Orange — under serious stress. Pieces above it will begin to lose stability quickly.
- Red — can no longer support anything. You cannot place a new piece on top of red.
The rule is simple: anchors to the ground are the strongest point; every piece above depends on the pieces below it. The further you climb from solid ground, the more stability each piece loses — unless you brace with stronger materials.
Material strength — the four tiers
Every material in Valheim carries a different amount of stability. The tiers matter most when you’re building tall or spanning wide gaps:
- Wood — the weakest tier. Good for small huts, interior walls and low roofs. Breaks quickly if you build more than a couple of stories with it.
- Core wood — from Black Forest pines. Significantly stronger than basic wood. Core wood beams let you build higher and span further without bracing. This is the material you should upgrade to as soon as you reach the Black Forest — it eliminates most early-game stability frustration.
- Stone — from the Stonecutter. Stone pieces are the strongest per unit weight. Walls, beams and arches of stone let you build fortresses, towers and large halls that would collapse in core wood.
- Ashwood and Timberwood — Ashwood comes from the Ashlands (chopping Scorched Trees) and has been in the game since the Ashlands update; Timberwood is new in 1.0 and comes from the Deep North. The 1.0 patch added four new Ashwood build pieces (the 67° angle variants) alongside the Timberwood pieces. Both unlock advanced late-game build pieces (Ashwood walls, Timber poles and beams). Their stability is comparable to or above Stone, and neither is flammable like regular Wood. Ashwood also resists fire damage, which makes it the preferred choice for long-term fortifications.
Being verified: We are not publishing the exact stability multiplier per material. The direction — Wood → Core Wood → Stone → Ashwood/Timberwood — is consistently confirmed by three independent sources. Ashwood specifically is confirmed non-flammable and fire-resistant; Timberwood’s exact support properties in comparison to Stone are still being verified by the community.
How stability degrades — the two axes
Stability degrades along two dimensions, and you can see both by studying a colour gradient on a tall structure:
- Height — the higher a piece sits above ground, the weaker it becomes. A second-floor beam is weaker than its equivalent on the ground. A third-floor beam is weaker still.
- Horizontal span — the further a piece extends from its support, the weaker it becomes. A beam that bridges two foundation pillars works; a beam that bridges three times that distance with only two supports will flash red.
The fix for both dimensions is bracing:
- Counter height with stronger materials (upgrade wood to core wood beams on upper floors).
- Counter span with intermediate supports (add a pillar under that long beam every few metres, or use an arch).
The most common failure scenarios
Scenario 1 — The tall wood tower that turns orange mid-way
Every new player tries this. The fix is not “don’t build tall” — it’s don’t build tall in wood. Replace the top half with core wood beams, or add corner pillars every three segments.
Scenario 2 — The roof that won’t hold
Wood roofing pieces need support every few tiles. A wooden beam placed mid-room perpendicular to the roof rafters — that’s called a purlin — lets the roof hold up far more weight. Without it, wide roofs collapse at the edges.
Scenario 3 — The bridge that sags in the middle
Bridges use the same stability system as walls. Wide spans need decking sections supported by beams underneath, not just planks laid across. If you want a long bridge over water, plan the beam supports before you start laying planks.
Scenario 4 — Red piece you can’t reach
If you accidentally created a red piece high up, don’t panic. Valheim lets you place a new foundation directly below it from the ground — just extend a stone wall up under the red piece and place a beam across to support it. The hammer UI shows the stability change in real time.
Rule of thumb for new builders
- Anchor at least one point to solid ground for every major section of your build.
- Upstairs = core wood, upper floors = stone — don’t try to build more than two stories in basic wood.
- Span > 4 beams = add a middle support — this is the point where red usually appears.
- Leave a gap for a chimney — smoke builds up in enclosed rooms and damages you. If your roof has no gap, punch one before you light the fire.
