Valheim Dedicated Server Guide — Self-Host or Rent in 2026

How to set up a Valheim dedicated server at 1.0: the free headless server tool, world name and password, port 2456, crossplay join codes, backups, and when renting beats self-hosting.

Self-host or rent?

Everything below assumes Valheim 1.0. The choice is really about uptime and networking:

  • Self-host if you play in scheduled sessions, have a spare machine that can stay on, and are comfortable forwarding ports. Cost: nothing but electricity.
  • Rent if your group spans timezones, you want the world always on, or you want a panel that handles ports, updates and backups. Cost: a monthly fee.

Setting up the free dedicated server

The dedicated server tool is a free, separate install — on Steam it lives under Library → Tools → Valheim Dedicated Server, and on a Linux box you can deploy the same thing with SteamCMD.

  1. Install the tool and open the install folder.
  2. Edit the launch script (start_headless_server.sh on Linux, .bat on Windows). It takes flags for the server name, the world name, a password and the port (2456 by default).
  3. Launch it headless — no game client — and read the console output until it reports the world is loaded and listening.
  4. Join from the game’s Join Game screen, either by IP or from the community server list.

Flag names and defaults change between releases. Read the script that shipped with your install instead of trusting an old tutorial — that is the single most common reason a copied command line fails.

Ports and networking

Forward UDP 2456 plus 2457 and 2458 to the server machine. If your group cannot see the server, the usual culprits are: ports forwarded to the wrong internal IP, a double NAT (router behind router), or ISP-level blocking of the game port. Rented servers skip all of this — the panel maps the ports for you.

Crossplay and join codes

With crossplay enabled, the server produces a join code, which is how Xbox, PlayStation, Switch 2 and Microsoft Store players get in. Two rules apply: crossplay must be on at the server level, and every player must be on the same game version. See the crossplay guide for the platform-by-platform detail.

Backups

Worlds live in the IronGate/Valheim worlds folder — LocalLow on Windows, .config/unity3d on Linux. Copy both the .db and .fwl files before any risky change: a mod install, a version update, a map edit. Most hosts run automated backups, but confirm the retention period before you depend on them.

Renting a Valheim server

If you would rather not manage a machine, these are the hosts Valheim groups most often shortlist. The table is a starting point for research, not a recommendation ranked by price — always confirm current specs and pricing on the host’s own site.

Valheim server hosts compared
Host Best for Panel & mods Check before you buy
Host Havok Small groups that want a Valheim-focused host with responsive support One-click installs for popular Valheim mods, plus world-file upload so you can move an existing save in Plan RAM against your player count, and whether backups are included
BisectHosting A low-cost first server, especially modded worlds Long one-click modpack list and help installing mods you bring yourself Renewal price versus the advertised first-term price, and the refund window
GTXGaming Groups spread across regions that care about hardware and location choice Panel with mod support and a choice of server locations That the location you pick actually covers every player, not just the host
Nitrado Players who already rent other games on the same account Preconfigured Valheim templates rather than manual file editing Contract length and auto-renewal terms before the first payment
Shockbyte The cheapest route to a world that is always online Panel with mod and plugin support Support response times and the exact backup policy

Plans, hardware and prices change often, so this table is a shortlist for research rather than a quote — confirm current specs, regions and pricing on the host’s own site before paying.

What to compare before you pay

  • Player slots versus RAM — the two are not the same thing, and an ageing world needs more memory than a fresh one.
  • Region coverage — a server on the wrong continent adds latency nobody enjoys.
  • Backups and restore — how many copies, how far back, and whether restoring is self-service.
  • Renewal price — introductory pricing is common; check what month two costs.
  • Panel quality — can you change the world seed, upload a save, and switch versions without a support ticket?

Keeping a server healthy

  • Update on the same day as the group, not before — version parity is what makes crossplay work.
  • Watch the log after any mod change; most breakage is visible there before it is visible in game.
  • Snapshot before big builds. Recovery from a two-day-old backup hurts far less than rebuilding a hall.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Valheim dedicated server free?
Yes. The dedicated server tool is a free install alongside the game on Steam, and can also be deployed with SteamCMD on Linux. You only pay if you choose to rent hardware from a host.
Which ports does a Valheim server need?
UDP 2456 for the game, plus 2457 and 2458 for the query/steam ports. Forward all three to the server machine, and confirm the current requirement in your host's documentation.
Do console players need crossplay enabled?
Yes. Crossplay has to be turned on for the server (the headless script has a crossplay flag) so it can issue a join code that Xbox, PlayStation, Switch 2 and Microsoft Store players can use. Everyone must also be on the same game version.
Where are the world files stored?
In the IronGate/Valheim worlds folder — under LocalLow on Windows and .config/unity3d on Linux. Back up both the .db and .fwl files.
How much RAM does a Valheim server need?
Enough headroom for your player count and world age; requirements grow as the world accumulates built structures and explored map data. Rather than quoting a number that goes stale, compare the current plan specs of the hosts below and buy one tier above the minimum you see advertised.
