Valheim Swamp Guide — Iron, Sunken Crypts, Wet+Cold and Bonemass
The full Swamp guide for Valheim 1.0: surviving the Wet+Cold debuff, finding and clearing Sunken Crypts for iron, farming Wraiths for Chain and trophies, and beating Bonemass for the Wishbone to unlock the Mountain.
By Valheim Field Guide Editorial Team
The Swamp is the first real difficulty wall
Black Forest taught you to manage greydwarf patrols. The Swamp teaches you to manage status effects. Wet + Cold drains your stamina regen and deals damage before you even fight anything. Draugr patrol the bogs day and night, Wraiths spawn at night, blobs ambush from the edges of fog, and the iron you came for is locked behind stone doors that need the Swamp Key from The Elder.
Most players spend more time dying to the environment than to enemies their first visit. Do not skip the preparation.

Preparation checklist — before you sail
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Swamp Key × 1 minimum | Opens Sunken Crypts. You get one from The Elder — do not lose it, you cannot re-craft a spare. |
| Sausages (3-5) | Boar Meat + Thistle at a Cauldron. Gives Warm status, cancels the Cold portion of Wet+Cold. Best value for the prep cost. |
| Honey (20+) | Food + Mead ingredient. Always carry honeyed food to stop health drain. |
| Iron Spear + Bronze Buckler | Best parry setup before Iron Sword. Buckler parries give stamina; Iron Spear has reach. |
| Bow + 20 arrows | Draugr archers and blobs are best dealt with at range when the bog slows you down. |
| Pickaxe + Wood | Need Wood to repair your longship; Iron for the pickaxe itself comes from scrap inside crypts. |
| Longship marked on map | You will die. You need to find your boat after respawn. |
What to skip
Wooden Shield — Bronze Buckler parries better and costs the same. Troll hide cape — Wolf Cape comes later, skip it.
Finding and clearing Sunken Crypts
Sunken Crypts are dark stone structures half-sunk into the bog. The entrance is a stone doorway with a skull carved above it and water up to your ankles inside. You need the Swamp Key to open the inner gate — the outer door can be forced open with damage, but the inner gate requires the key.
Crypt structure and enemy patrols
Each crypt has 2-4 levels, connected by stone staircases. The layout is generated per-crypt but follows a predictable pattern:
- Level 1: 1-2 Blobs (acid splash damage), 1-2 Draugr, chest with 2-4 Iron scrap piles
- Level 2: 2-3 Draugr + 1 Draugr archer, 1 Blob, 2 chests with 3-5 scrap piles each
- Level 3 (deeper crypts only): 1 Abomination (armoured blob, very slow but hits hard) + 3-4 Draugr, 2-3 chests
Fog inside crypts is real. You cannot see enemies coming unless you light the area. Carry torches (Wood × 1 + Resin × 1) — one per level minimum. Do not drop them, do not set them on wet ground, and do not leave chests unattended while you go light the next room.
The Iron scrap strategy
Iron scrap cannot be portaled — like all ores, it is blocked from portal travel (so are the ingots you smelt from it). So:
- Mine all scrap → keep it in your inventory (or leave it in the crypt chests)
- Carry it to your longship, or walk it back to base
- Smelt it at home
- Sail the ingots to your next destination (Mountain) or keep them at base
This is why the Swamp feels like a logistics puzzle, not a combat zone. You are hauling scrap home by hand or by ship, not portaling it.
Surviving Draugr patrols outside crypts
Draugr spawn constantly in the Swamp — every bog patch, every old hut, every stone structure. They come in three types:
- Draugr warriors: melee, shield-capable, slow. Parry with Bronze Buckler → Iron Spear thrust.
- Draugr archers: ranged, hit for 15-20 damage. Stay in motion, use bow, or close the gap before they fire.
- Wraiths: float, only spawn at night. Weak to Fire and Spirit damage; Resistant to Blunt, Slash, and Pierce; Immune to Frost and Poison. Bronze weapons work but take longer — kite until daybreak or bring fire arrows.
Wraiths and the Wishbone
The Wishbone is the guaranteed drop from Bonemass, not from Wraiths. It is the item that pings buried silver deposits in the Mountain biome — silver is mostly underground and invisible, so without it you cannot reliably find it. Wraiths, for their part, drop a Chain (guaranteed) and a Wraith trophy (5%). Wear the Wishbone in your tool belt — it pings faster as you get closer to buried silver.
Blobs and Leech — the forgotten threats
Blobs
Bouncy green acid sacs. They shoot acid in a spray pattern that covers a 10-foot cone at medium range. The acid leaves a puddle that damages you for 5 seconds after impact.
Strategy: Keep distance, use bow, or parry at close range (timing is tight but possible with a Buckler). They are slow — you can outrun them almost always.
Leech
Tiny red parasites that spawn in shallow bog water and attach to your legs. Each Leech applies a 15-second poison debuff that drains stamina fast. They do not drop anything useful — just kill them with a quick sword swing before they attach.
Abomination — the rare Swamp miniboss
Abominations only spawn deep inside crypts. They are large, slow, hit hard, and are armoured — the armour chunks break off when you hit them, reducing their damage until they respawn the armour.
Strategy: Clear the room of Draugr first. Kite the Abomination in a circle and hit its exposed back when it attacks. It is very slow but hits hard, so bring stamina food and keep moving. It drops Root and Guck (plus its trophy). Withered Bones come from the muddy scrap piles in crypts, and Blood Bags from Leeches — not from the Abomination.
Bonemass — the progression gate
Bonemass’s altar is always inside a Swamp zone. Walk until you see a circle of stone pillars with a bone rune symbol in the centre. Sacrifice 10 Withered Bones to summon it.
Bonemass mechanics
- Three attack patterns: club smash (melee, telegraphed), gas cloud (area of effect, Wet+Cold+Poison), spits a blob minion (drains your health if it touches you)
- Weak to blunt damage — mace and club weapons deal more damage than sword
- Resists pierce — bow and spear are bad choices
- Summons more blobs as it loses health
Recommended gear for Bonemass
Iron Sword + Bronze Buckler → swap to Iron Mace if you have one. Three Sausages + Cooked Deer Meat + Cooked Boar Meat. Mead (Honey + Blueberry + Thistle) in case you need extra health.
Bonemass Forsaken Power
25% resistance to slash, pierce, and blunt damage; blocking costs no stamina; +5 stamina returned per successful block. This is the single best combat Forsaken Power — activate it at the Sacrificial Stones before you step foot on the mountain.
Checklist before leaving the Swamp
- Wishbone in tool belt — will ping silver in Mountain
- Wolf Cape material — you will need Wolf pelts on the Mountain, but do not craft it yet, craft it at the Mountain where the wolves are
- Iron gear fully crafted — Iron Armor set + Iron Sword + Iron Pickaxe + Iron Mace (for Bonemass if you did not have it before)
- Swamp Portal set up — put a portal right outside Bonemass’s altar so you can reactivate the Forsaken Power without sailing back
- Withered Bones stocked — keep a chestful in your Swamp outpost for future Bonemass resets if needed
The six mistakes that get you stuck in the Swamp
1. No Swamp Key on your first visit
You cannot open Sunken Crypts without it. Get it from The Elder in the Black Forest first.
2. Entering without Sausages
Wet+Cold alone drains stamina so fast you cannot fight Draugr. Sausages grant Warm status and cancel the Cold half of the debuff.
3. Walking through the bog instead of around it
Bog water slows you permanently and applies Wet. Follow the edges of stone structures and dry patches of ground.
4. Fighting multiple Blobs at once
Blobs stack acid puddles on the ground — three blobs can cover an entire room. Kill them one by one, kite each one away from the others.
5. Expecting to portal iron home
Iron scrap, iron ore, and iron ingots all cannot be portaled. Carry the scrap to your longship or walk it home, then smelt it at base — not in the Swamp.
6. Not carrying torches into crypts
Draugr ambush you in complete darkness. Torches are cheap and every crypt has a resin chest — do not skip them.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I survive the Wet and Cold debuff in the Swamp?
- Eat food that gives Warm status before stepping foot in the Swamp — Sausages (Boar Meat + Thistle at a Cauldron) is the cheapest option and you can make it at the Meadows base before you leave. If you do not have Sausages, cook Honey + Blueberry + Thistle into a Mead at a Cauldron, then ferment it in a Fermenter. The mead resists Wet+Cold but does not grant Warm status, so it is a second-best.
- How much iron do I need for a full set?
- A full Iron Armor set (20 Iron + 2 Deer Hide per piece, 60 Iron total) plus Iron Sword (20 Iron) + Iron Pickaxe (15 Iron) uses about 95 Iron ingots. Each Sunken Crypt yields a handful of scrap piles — clear 4-6 crypts and you will have enough. Some players farm 10+ crypts to build an extra portal hub and a longship dock.
- What is the Wishbone and why do I need it?
- The Wishbone is the guaranteed drop from Bonemass (the Swamp boss), not from Wraiths. When equipped in your tool belt, it pings buried silver deposits in the Mountain biome — silver veins are mostly underground and invisible, so the Wishbone is required to find them.
- Can I port iron scrap back to base?
- No — iron scrap and iron ore are both blocked from portal travel, just like iron ingots. You cannot portal any iron (scrap, ore, or ingot) home. The strategy is: mine the scrap in the Sunken Crypts, carry it to your longship or walk it back to base, then smelt it at home.
