Valheim Mountain Guide — Silver, Wolves, Frost and Moder
The full Mountain guide for Valheim 1.0: surviving the Freezing debuff, finding silver with the Wishbone, farming wolves for Wolf Cape and Wolf Armor, collecting Dragon Eggs, and beating Moder to unlock the Plains.
By Valheim Field Guide Editorial Team
The Mountain is the coldest biome — prepare before you step foot on it
The Mountain is the first biome that punishes you with an automatic environmental debuff the moment you arrive. Freezing drains health and stamina over time — you cannot fight, cannot sprint, and will die in 30-60 seconds unless you stop it.
Unlike the Swamp’s Wet+Cold (which only drains stamina and can be resisted with food), Freezing must be nullified with gear. The Wolf Cape is non-negotiable. Do not climb the mountain without one.

Preparation checklist — what to bring up the mountain
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Wolf Cape | 6 Wolf pelts + 4 Silver + 1 Wolf trophy at a Workbench (level 2). Must craft this first — Freezing kills you otherwise. |
| Wishbone | From Bonemass (the Swamp boss). Pings buried silver on the Mountain. Equip in tool belt — listen for the ping. |
| Iron Armor + Iron Sword + Iron Mace | Your Swamp gear is good enough to start. Upgrade to Silver as you mine. |
| Iron Pickaxe | Required to mine silver (the Iron tier is the tool that unlocks silver; there is no silver pickaxe in this part of the game). |
| 3 cooked meats + Sausages | Sausages are still useful — Warm status resists cold from rain at the mountain base. |
| Portal pair set up at the mountain base | Not on the peak — the peak is dangerous. Put one portal at your base, one at a safe flat spot near the base of the mountain. |
| Longship marked on map | Sailing is required to get to the Mountain, and you will need it to haul silver and Dragon Eggs home. |
What to skip initially
Frost Resistance Mead — only lasts 10 minutes per drink, so it is a backup for your first trips, not the primary plan. The Wolf Cape is the permanent fix once you have the Silver and wolf trophies. Obsidian — nice to have later, skip it until you have your Wolf Cape.
Step 1: Find the mountain base camp
Before you climb, find a flat, wind-protected spot near the foot of the mountain — usually in a valley between mountain peaks, or behind a rock formation that blocks direct wind. Build:
- A Workbench
- A shelter with a bed (set spawn)
- A Portal
- A small chest
This is your safe zone. Wolves and Drakes still spawn here sometimes, but the Freezing debuff will be reduced (lower elevation = less cold) and you can run into the shelter.
Craft the Wolf Cape at the base camp
Wolves spawn on the Mountain and at the edges of the Black Forest-Mountain border. Kill a few wolves at the base to start banking pelts — the Wolf Cape needs 6 Wolf pelts, 4 Silver, and 1 Wolf trophy. (Silver comes from the mountain itself, so bring Frost Resistance Mead to fund the first trips — that is the classic chicken-and-egg.) Only after this step should you climb the peak.
Step 2: Silver mining
Silver veins are buried underground in the Mountain biome and invisible on the surface. A rare vein can be partially exposed on rough terrain, but you should assume every vein is buried — so the Wishbone is the tool that finds silver. (You can also “prospect” by hitting the ground with a Stagbreaker or Iron Sledge until a “Too hard” message appears, but the Wishbone is far faster.)
How to use the Wishbone:
- Equip it in your tool belt (that slot is where it activates)
- Walk slowly across the mountain peaks
- Listen for the ping. The ping gets louder and faster as you approach a vein
- When the ping is constant and high-pitched, you are standing above silver
- Dig straight down — veins sit a few meters below surface level
- Mine the silver ore with your Iron Pickaxe → carry it to your longship or walk it home → smelt at home
Silver ore is blocked from portal travel — and so are silver ingots. You cannot portal either one. So the workflow is: mine silver on the Mountain → put the ore in a chest at your mountain portal → portal yourself home → smelt at home → craft your Silver gear at home. There is no reason to smelt on the mountain (and you would be carrying ingots back up for nothing).
Silver production math
Silver is a big investment, so spend it in priority order:
- Wolf Fur Cape (first priority): 4 Silver
- Silver Sword (or Frostner): 40 Silver
- Full Wolf Armor set (Drake Helmet + Chestpiece + Trousers): 60 Silver
A single vein typically yields around 80 silver ore (roughly 40 ingots after smelting, 2 ore per ingot). Plan on two or three veins to cover the cape and a first weapon; a full set plus a weapon means mining a couple more.
Wolves, Drakes and Stone Golems — who fights you up here
Wolves
The Mountain’s most common enemy. Fast, hits hard, packs of 2-4 patrol the peaks and valleys. They have a howl that summons more wolves — if you hear a howl while fighting one, run or expect to fight 3 more in 10 seconds.
Strategy: Use Iron Sword + Bronze Buckler. Parry the bite → thrust. Or use a bow — wolves can be kited with arrows since they are vulnerable to ranged damage. They drop Wolf pelts (3 per wolf) and Wolf trophies (rare, needed for Wolf Cape).
Drakes
Black winged dragon-lizards that patrol the Mountain peaks. They spit ice projectiles that apply a Frost debuff (slower than Freezing but it stacks). They are fast and fly — you cannot hit them with a melee weapon while they are airborne.
Strategy: Use a bow with obsidian or fire arrows (frost arrows are useless — Drakes are immune to frost). They are ranged and hard to hit while airborne, so shoot while they pass low or right after they land. They drop a Freeze Gland (guaranteed, used in frost arrows and frost weapons) and a Drake trophy (5%, used in the Drake Helmet).
Fenrings
Wolves that spawn only at night on the Mountain. They leap in close and hit fast — kite them with a bow or keep moving. They are weak to fire. (Unlike wolves, they are not tameable.)
Stone Golems
Massive slow stone constructs that hide inside Mountain caves (dark stone entrances, no key needed). They are very weak to pickaxes — a pickaxe does far more damage than any weapon. They drop Crystal and Stone (plus a Stone Golem trophy). Avoid them unless you need the Crystal.
Dragon Eggs — Moder’s summon items
Dragon Eggs are the heaviest item you cannot portal with. Each egg weighs 200, so even with a Megingjord belt you can barely carry two at a time and should travel light. You need 3 eggs to summon Moder.
Where to find them
Dragon nests are stone structures on the very highest peaks of the Mountain — look for them from your base camp at sunrise/sunset when the sun illuminates the highest rocks. Each nest has 0-2 eggs. Kill any Drake guarding the nest, pick up the egg.
Transporting Dragon Eggs
Cannot portal. You must carry them down the Mountain to your Longship.
Strategy:
- Pick up one egg
- Walk slowly down the mountain — do not sprint, you will fall
- Put egg in Longship storage
- Walk back up, pick up next egg
- Repeat until you have all 3
- Sail the eggs to Moder’s altar (which is also on a peak)
Or: sail the eggs to your base, then sail them to Moder’s altar on the same Longship.
Moder — the progression gate
Moder’s altar is always on the highest accessible peak of the Mountain. Look for a circle of stone pillars with a dragon rune. You must climb to it — there is no shortcut portal.
Prepare first: activate Bonemass Forsaken Power before climbing (resists pierce damage from Moder’s tail swipe, slash from claws). Activate Moder’s own power after you beat it.
Moder mechanics
- Frost breath cone: a wide arc of frost that applies a slow debuff. Dodge behind a rock or pillar.
- Tail swipe: when Moder flies low, she swipes her tail in a wide arc. Resist with Bonemass power, or jump over it.
- Ice spit (airborne): while flying, she fires a volley of 16 icicles that leave destructible ice crystals on the ground. Break line of sight or run behind cover.
- Most damage comes from the ground phase. She lands every 30-40 seconds — that is when you hit her with a Silver Sword or obsidian/fire arrows.
Recommended gear for Moder
Wolf or Silver gear + Silver Sword + obsidian or fire arrows (Moder is immune to frost, so frost arrows do nothing). Bonemass Forsaken Power active. Three foods eaten.
Moder Forsaken Power
A tailwind while sailing (it lasts 300 seconds), +300 carry weight, +10% movement speed, and 50% frost resistance. This is the game-changer for progression: you can now haul large loads and sail faster. Activate this power before your next long sail — and reactivate it at the altar if the timer runs out mid-crossing.
Wolf Armor — the optional peak upgrade
Wolf Armor is the Mountain’s armour tier, made from Silver + Wolf pelts/fang/trophies (Drake Helmet, Wolf Hide Chestpiece, Wolf Hide Trousers). The chestpiece and the Wolf Fur Cape grant frost resistance. It is not required for the Plains — Black Metal armor is the next mandatory tier. But Wolf Armor makes Moder and the Mountain much easier to survive.
The six mistakes that get you stuck on the Mountain
1. No Wolf Cape before climbing
Freezing debuff kills you in 30-60 seconds unless you have the Wolf Cape. Mead only lasts 10 minutes and costs Honey every drink. Kill 3 wolves at the base first.
2. Silver portal strategy backwards
Silver ore and silver ingots both cannot be portaled. So: mine on the Mountain → put the ore in a chest at your mountain portal → portal yourself home → smelt → craft gear at home → portal back up without silver. Do not try to carry ingots back up the mountain — there is no smelter to speak of up there and no reason to haul metal for nothing.
3. Trying to portal with Dragon Eggs
Dragon Eggs weigh 200 each, are blocked from portals, and you need 3. Walk (or cart/ship) them down the mountain. Never try to portal with one.
4. Fighting Drakes with melee
Drakes fly. You cannot hit them with a sword. Bring a bow + obsidian or fire arrows (they are immune to frost). They are vulnerable to ranged damage.
5. Not setting spawn at the mountain base camp
If you die on the peak, you respawn at your last bed. If your bed is at your Meadows base, you have to sail all the way back up. Build a small shelter + bed + portal at the Mountain base before climbing.
6. Skipping Bonemass power before Moder
Moder uses pierce and slash attacks. Bonemass Forsaken Power grants 25% resistance to slash, pierce, and blunt damage, and makes blocking free. Activate it before the fight.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I stop the Freezing debuff on the Mountain?
- Equip the Wolf Cape — it is crafted from 6 Wolf pelts + 4 Silver + 1 Wolf trophy at a Workbench (level 2), and grants frost resistance that stops Freezing. You can also drink Frost Resistance Mead (mead base of 10 Honey + 5 Thistle + 2 Bloodbag + 1 Greydwarf Eye) but it only lasts 10 minutes per drink. The Wolf Cape is permanent and the correct long-term solution.
- Where is silver ore?
- Silver ore is found in veins buried underground in the Mountain biome — they are invisible on the surface. Equip the Wishbone in your tool belt and walk the mountain, listening for the ping: it gets louder and faster as you approach a vein. When the ping is steady and high-pitched, dig straight down with your Iron Pickaxe. A rare vein can be partially exposed on rough terrain, but you should assume every vein is buried.
- How many Dragon Eggs do I need for Moder?
- Three Dragon Eggs. Each egg is found in a dragon nest — a stone structure high up on the mountain where Drakes sleep. Eggs are heavy and blocked from portal travel, so carry them down the mountain to your Longship and sail them home.
- How much silver do I need for a full set?
- Silver is a big investment. The Wolf Armor set (Drake Helmet + Wolf Hide Chestpiece + Wolf Hide Trousers) uses 60 Silver at base quality, the Wolf Fur Cape is 4, and the Silver Sword is 40. A single vein typically yields around 80 silver ore (roughly 40 ingots after smelting), so two or three veins cover the cape and a first silver weapon. Craft the Wolf Fur Cape and one weapon before committing to the full set.
