Valheim Ocean Guide — Boats, Wind, Serpents and Leviathans
How the Valheim ocean works: the four boats and what each is for, reading the wind indicator and tacking, surviving Sea Serpents, mining Leviathans for chitin, and why ore has to be sailed home.

Why the ocean is a progression gate
Valheim’s world is a scatter of islands. Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp may sit on one landmass, but from the Mountain onward almost every step requires open water. The ocean is not a biome you visit — it is the corridor every other biome is reached through.
Two hard rules:
- You cannot swim across it. Stamina drains, then drowning damage starts.
- Ore and metal cannot go through portals. Hauling it home by boat is the intended loop.
The four boats
| Boat | Stage | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Raft | Meadows | Short coastal hops and river crossings only — slow, fragile, no cargo |
| Karve | Black Forest (bronze) | First real ocean boat: faster than a Serpent, has storage, seats passengers |
| Longship | Swamp (iron) | The workhorse for the rest of the game: durable, large cargo, extra seats |
| Drakkar | Late game (Ashlands) | Crew hauler for the hardest waters and the biggest loads |
| Boat | HP | Storage slots | Extra seats | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raft | 300 | 0 | 0 | 20 Wood, 6 Leather Scraps, 6 Resin |
| Karve | 500 | 4 | 2 | 30 Fine Wood, 10 Deer Hide, 20 Resin, 80 Bronze Nails |
| Longship | 1,000 | 18 | 4 | 100 Iron Nails, 10 Deer Hide, 40 Fine Wood, 40 Ancient Bark |
| Drakkar | 3,000 | 32 | 8 | 100 Iron Nails, 30 Ceramic Plates, 50 Fine Wood, 25 Yggdrasil Wood |
Top speed is not a fixed number — it depends on wind and sail setting (see Reading the wind). What actually changes from boat to boat is the storage and seat counts above: the Longship is the ore-hauling workhorse, the Drakkar the endgame crew hauler, the Karve the early exploration boat, and the Raft the cheap coastal hopper.
Build boats with the hammer near water — they cannot be placed on land. Mark the boat on your map every time you land somewhere new, or you will spend an hour walking back to it.
Reading the wind
Take the rudder and the wind indicator appears. It tells you whether your sail can do anything:
- Favourable wind — the sail catches it, so use half or full sail.
- The no-sail zone — the sail is useless. Drop to rowing speed and change angle, or wait; wind direction shifts over time.
- Speed settings — three forward levels plus reverse. The lowest is paddling, which works regardless of wind and is what you want in tight channels and near docks. The two higher levels set the sail.
Tacking
If your destination is straight into the wind, do not force a straight line. Sail diagonally across the wind, then turn and sail the opposite diagonal, repeating until you arrive. Longer angled runs beat tight zig-zags, because every turn costs speed. A side wind is often the fastest angle, not a direct tailwind.
Momentum and docking
Boats drift and turn slowly. Slow down well before shore, rocks and docks — beaching a Longship at speed damages it and can strand you. Reverse out rather than trying to turn in a tight cove.
Weather and repair
Storms raise the swell and slow you down, and fog removes your visibility; heavy seas make collisions with rocks far more likely. Boats are repaired at a Workbench on shore like any other built structure, so keep a small outpost with a roofed Workbench at each harbour you use. Base and outpost layout: base design ideas.
Moder’s Forsaken Power gives you a tailwind while sailing (it lasts 300 seconds), plus a large carry-weight increase — set it before any long crossing or ore haul, and re-claim it if the timer runs out mid-crossing. Full list: Forsaken Powers.
Sea Serpents
The ocean’s only real predator. Serpents appear most often at night and in storms, but can spawn in daylight.
- Any boat except the Raft can outrun one. If you are under-geared, run.
- Fight it with a bow while a companion steers. Keeping the boat moving is the whole fight.
- Kill it near shore. Serpent meat floats, but the scales and trophy sink — so finish it in shallow water or drag it to land with a harpoon before it goes under.
- Serpent meat is some of the best food available at that stage, and scales feed into high-tier gear.
Leviathans: the floating islands
Leviathans look like small islands from a distance — only their backs break the surface. They are the source of Barnacles, which yield chitin, and chitin is what the harpoon is made from.
- Mine barnacles with a pickaxe.
- Harvesting barnacles can make the Leviathan dive. Keep enough stamina to swim back to your boat, and do not go deep onto its back.
- It is the single most efficient chitin source in the game — mark the location if you find one.
Ocean checklist before a long crossing
- Boat repaired, and a repair option (Workbench + shelter) at both ends.
- Three foods eaten, plus spare food in a chest on board.
- Bow and arrows for Serpents; a harpoon if you plan to collect scales.
- Moder’s power set at the Sacrificial Stones.
- Wind direction checked and a tacking plan if it is against you.
- Boat marked on the map, destination marked too.
- Cargo secured — ore is the reason you are out here, and losing it to the deep costs a whole trip.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I swim across the ocean in Valheim?
- No. Swimming drains stamina fast, and once stamina is gone you take drowning damage until you reach shore or a boat. Ocean travel requires a boat, which is why a dock at your base is a progression requirement, not a decoration.
- Which boat should I build?
- The Karve is your first real ocean boat — fast enough to outrun a Sea Serpent and it has storage. The Longship is the workhorse for the rest of the game: more health, far more cargo and extra seats. The Raft is for short coastal hops only, and the Drakkar is the late-game crew hauler.
- Why can I not put my ore through a portal?
- Metals and ores are restricted from portal travel, which is exactly what makes sailing part of progression. Haul copper, iron, silver and black metal by boat, and let the carry-weight and portal rules shape where you build outposts.
- How do I get Serpent Scales?
- Kill a Sea Serpent near land. Its meat floats, but the scales and trophy sink — so fight it close to shore, or use a harpoon crafted from Leviathan chitin to drag the serpent to land before finishing it.
