Call to Arms (patch 0.221.4) moved from the Public Test Branch into the live game on 9 September 2025. It is the most significant combat-focused update since release — it added a brand-new equipment slot, a new resource, a new dodge mechanic, and a way to practise fighting your friends without the risk of griefing.

This page records what the update introduced. The item counts and mechanics are taken from Iron Gate’s official 0.221.4 patch notes; the trinket surge values are confirmed against valheim.wiki’s trinket page and multiple independent guides.

The Trinket and adrenaline system

The core of the update is Trinkets: a new equippable slot whose item grants a temporary perk when you fill an adrenaline bar in combat. Adrenaline builds by:

  • Hitting enemies
  • Triggering a Forsaken Power
  • Using certain magic attacks
  • Performing a Perfect Block or a Perfect Dodge roll

When the bar is full you get an adrenaline surge — a temporary buff tied to the Trinket you have equipped. Adrenaline drains when you are not in active combat, and you only build it while a Trinket is equipped.

The 13 Trinkets at launch, with each surge’s effect, duration and adrenaline cost:

Trinket Surge effect Duration Adrenaline cost
Heart of the Forest +25% health regen 60s 50
Bronze Pendant +25% stamina regen 60s 50
Iron Brooch +50 health, +20 armor 30s 65
Nimble Anklet +50 stamina, +15% movement speed 30s 60
Crystal Heart Slight resistance vs. blunt, slash and pierce (75% damage taken) 50s 80
Wolf Sight +20 Bow skill, +20 Spear skill, +10% pierce damage 30s 55
Fins of Destiny +50% swim speed, -80% swim stamina usage 120s 10
Evasion Mantle -50% block stamina usage, +50% parry bonus, +20 Dodge skill 120s 60
Bracelets of the Brave +100 health, +20 Club skill, +10% blunt damage 60s 85
Pulsating Earrings +25% Eitr regen 60s 65
Resounding Shackle +100 stamina, +10% slash damage 60s 75
Jörmundling +100 Eitr, +20 Elemental Magic skill, +20 Blood Magic skill 60s 70
Brimstone +100 health, +100 stamina (instant, no duration) 100

Most are crafted at a Level 1 Forge; Pulsating Earrings, Resounding Shackle, Jörmundling and Brimstone require the Black Forge.

Perfect Dodge Roll and a cheaper Perfect Block

Two changes make a no-shield melee build far more viable:

  • Perfect Dodge Roll — dodge an attack that would have hit you, and recover a percentage of your stamina in the process.
  • Perfect Block no longer costs stamina — the previous penalty for a well-timed block was removed.

Together these reward precise timing over a raised shield, which matters most for players who have been running the stealth archer or a shield-turtle style covered in the shields and blocking guide.

Wooden weapons for sparring

The update adds a full set of wooden weapons (sword, greatsword, axe, two-handed axe, mace, sledge, spear, atgeir and knife) that deal no damage to players. They let a co-op party spar against each other without the risk of griefing — useful for teaching a friend the new dodge system or rehearsing a boss run.

Pair them with the new combat practice build pieces:

  • Combat Practice: Archery Target
  • Combat Practice: T.W.I.G. (a practice dummy)

A new CombatRuin01 location also provides a ready-made arena.

Two new creatures

  • Bear — a new enemy that drops Bear Meat, and sits between greydwarves and trolls in difficulty.
  • Vile — a new creature from the darker areas of the world.

Their loot feeds new gear: Bear parts make the Patterns of the Bear set, and Vile parts make the Vilebone set.

New gear

The update added 18 weapons, two armour sets, and a batch of new materials:

  • Armour sets: Patterns of the Bear (chest / legs / helmet) and Vilebone (chest / legs / helmet), plus a purchasable Sweat Band.
  • New weapons include five Bottled Blob throwable weapons (Poison, Oozer, Tar, Lava, Frost), the wooden sparring set, two new fist weapons (Paws of the Bear, Vilebone Maulclaws), and two new battleaxes (Black Metal, Skull Splittur).
  • New materials: Blob Vial, Ectoplasm, Ghost Trophy, Bear Hide, Bear Trophy, Bear Paw, Vile Trophy, Vile Ribcage.
  • Build pieces and furniture: Bearskin Rug, plus the combat practice pieces above.
  • Cosmetics: 3 new hairstyles (Mullet, Castellan, Vinland Shave) and 5 new beard styles.

The Forsaken Powers rework

The update rebalanced every Forsaken Power. The new values, straight from the patch notes:

  • Eikthyr: 60% reduced stamina usage for running, jumping and swimming.
  • The Elder: 60% increased chopping and mining damage, 30% increased health regeneration.
  • Bonemass: 25% resistance versus pierce, slash and blunt, 100% reduced block stamina usage, 5 stamina on return per block.
  • Moder: always tailwind, +300 carry weight, 10% increased movement speed, 50% frost resistance.
  • Yagluth: 50% lightning resistance, +25 Farm skill, 10% increased damage.
  • The Queen: 100% increased Eitr regeneration, 100% reduced sneak cost, 50% poison resistance.
  • Fader: 100% increased adrenaline, 50% reduced stagger meter modifier, 50% fire resistance. Fader and the Ashlands biome were added in 1.0 — this power value was part of the Call to Arms rework but the boss did not exist when the update shipped.

If you already chose a power before this update, the rework may change which one is best for your build — the pairing guide in the Forsaken Powers article should be re-checked against these values.

Combat changes worth noting

  • Reduced movement speed penalty on battleaxes, sledgehammers and tower shields.
  • Vertical fighting is now easier on slopes.
  • The 0.221.4 notes list exactly one new skill — the Perfect Dodge Roll above — and no other new skill or skill branch is named in the official patch notes.

What to do after updating

  • Equip a Trinket and test the adrenaline surge in a low-stakes fight — the new no-stamina Perfect Block makes the timing easy to learn.
  • Try the no-shield melee build if you have been running a shield.
  • Build the combat pieces at your base so the party can spar with the wooden set.
  • Re-evaluate your Forsaken Power — several got meaningful changes (Moder’s tailwind and Yagluth’s lightning resistance stand out).
