Valheim Plains Guide — Deathsquitos, Fulings, Black Metal and Yagluth

The full Plains guide for Valheim 1.0: surviving Deathsquitos and their 90 pierce damage, clearing Fuling Villages for Black Metal scrap, farming Barley and Flax, taming Lox, and beating Yagluth to unlock the Mistlands and magic.

Verified Valheim 1.0
Stage: Mid game Plains

By Valheim Field Guide Editorial Team

The Plains look peaceful. They are not.

Rolling golden hills, soft grass, wild Cloudberries growing in the open. The Plains look like a vacation after the Mountain’s cold. That feeling lasts about 10 seconds — long enough for the first Deathsquito to hit you for 90 pierce damage and a pack of Fulings to come screaming over the hill with clubs, swords, and fire torches.

The Plains are Valheim’s sharpest difficulty spike. Everything here is faster, hits harder, and travels in groups. The openness is not freedom — it is zero cover. But Black Metal, Barley, Flax, and the final classic boss Yagluth all live here. You have to learn to survive it.

Preparation checklist — gear that makes the Plains survivable

Item Why
Root Harnesk Swamp-tier chest piece. Grants pierce resistance that completely neutralizes Deathsquito damage. This is non-negotiable.
Frostner or Iron Sledge Frostner (craftable: 30 Silver + 10 Ancient Bark + 5 Ymir Flesh + 5 Freeze Glands) has frost slow + spirit damage — perfect for crowd control. Iron Sledge (Black Forge) is a two-handed AOE hammer that hits hard and staggers Fulings.
Black Metal Shield (or Bronze Buckler) You take 80+ damage per swing without blocking. Parries are mandatory against Fuling Berserkers.
Wolf Armor legs + helmet Cold resistance from Mountain still applies; Wolf Armor has better mobility than Silver Armor.
Moder Forsaken Power Tailwind while sailing (lasts 300 seconds), +300 carry weight, +10% movement speed and 50% frost resistance. You will haul Black Metal scrap by Longship — this power makes it feasible.
3 foods: Sausages + Cooked Deer Meat + Onion Soup Onion Soup is Mountain-tier, gives 60 stamina + 20 health — ideal for the Plains’ sustained combat.
Longship marked on map Black Metal scrap cannot portal. You sail it home. Mark your boat before stepping foot on shore.

What to bring for a first scout run only

Iron gear (not Black Metal yet — you are here to farm scrap, not bring it), Bow with frost arrows, and nothing else. The first trip is to mark Fuling Villages and Deathsquito hotspots, not to farm.

Deathsquitos — the glass cannons of the Plains

Deathsquitos are the single fastest kill rate in the game at this tier. They have only 10 HP — a single arrow or sword swing kills them. But their sting hits for 90 pierce damage, which will one-shot you through Iron Armor.

How Deathsquitos attack

They buzz around at a distance (15-20 feet), then make a straight beeline toward you for one sting, then fly back out of range. The attack pattern is perfectly predictable — you just have to react fast enough.

Three counter strategies

1. Root Harnesk (best) — Pierce resistance turns 90 damage into 0-5 damage. You can tank Deathsquitos with this on. The tradeoff is you might not have upgraded the Root Harnesk as high as your current gear.

2. Kill before they sting (melee) — Swing your sword in a wide arc every time you see one coming. They are fragile — any hit kills them. The timing: start swinging as soon as you see them (they are loud — listen for the buzz), not when they reach you.

3. Kill before they sting (ranged) — Bow with 10+ arrows. Aim at the body, not wings. One arrow = one kill. Best for scout runs where you do not want to engage Fulings.

Deathsquito drops

Needles — 1-2 per kill. Needles are the only way to craft the Porcupine (the strongest one-handed mace before Mistlands) and are also used in Lox Meat Pie recipes. Farm Needles passively by killing Deathsquitos while clearing Fuling Villages.

Fulings — the village dwellers

Fulings are the Plains’ main enemy. They live in Fuling Villages — fortified wooden structures with walls, towers, and runestone circles. Fulings spawn from these buildings and from spawner-like totems.

Fuling types

Type Health Drop Notes
Fuling (normal) 175 1 Black Metal scrap 4 weapon variants: Club, Spear, Sword, Torch (fire). 80+ damage per hit.
Fuling Berserker 800 3-5 Black Metal scrap, 10% Fuling Totem The village’s heavy hitter. Slow, telegraphed attacks, drops totems for Yagluth summon.
Fuling Shaman 250 2 Black Metal scrap Stands on roof, shoots fire projectiles and heals other Fulings. Kill first when engaging a village.

Fuling Villages — step-by-step clear strategy

  1. Scout first. Get to a high vantage point near the village. Count: how many Berserkers, how many Shamans, how many normal Fulings. Mark the Shaman’s position on your map.
  2. Kill the Shaman first. Shamans heal other Fulings and sit on roofs with fire arrows. Use a bow and kill from distance before engaging.
  3. Pull Fulings one at a time. Stand 20 feet away from the wall and wait for one Fuling to come out. Kill it, retreat, repeat. Do not run in — you will face 6-8 at once.
  4. Kill Berserkers with Frostner. Frost slow + spirit damage chunks their 800 HP fast. Kite sideways, hit when they swing and miss.
  5. Smash totems and walls after clearing. Walls are wood — chop them down. Totems stop spawning Fulings.
  6. Loot everything. Chests inside have Coins, Black Metal scrap, Barley seeds, and Fuling trophies.

Black Metal scrap strategy

Black Metal scrap cannot portal. You must haul it to your Longship manually. So:

  1. Clear a village → collect all scrap into a pile outside the village
  2. Mark the pile on your map
  3. Repeat with 2-3 more villages
  4. Walk all scrap to your Longship in one trip
  5. Sail home, smelt, craft gear

Do not try to portal with Black Metal scrap. The portal icon will show the blue-portal-crossed-red error. This is one of the most common Plains logistics mistakes.

Barley, Flax and Tar — Plains-only resources

Barley and Flax

Seeds drop from chests in Fuling Villages and sometimes from wild patches in the Plains. You can only plant them in the Plains biome — anywhere else, they will not grow.

  • Barley → Barley Wine (fire resistance mead) + Lox Meat Pie (75 health + 24 stamina, the best food in the Plains tier)
  • Flax → Linen thread → Padded Armor (Black Metal tier upgrade, more armor points than Black Metal Armor)

Tar pits

Tar pits are dark, oily pools found in the Plains. They spawn Growths — large, tanky slime enemies that spray tar. Tar is harvested from these pits and used for Darkwood building pieces and shingle roofs (not for gear). Approach tar pits with caution — Growths are tanky and fight in groups.

Lox — the tamable Plains rhino

Lox are large woolly rhinos that roam the Plains. They are slow, hit hard, and can be tamed with Barley, Cloudberries or Flax. Tamed Lox follow you around and can be ridden once you craft a Lox Saddle.

Taming a Lox

  1. Find a Lox (they graze in open Plains)
  2. Build a 4x4 stone wall pen around it (Lox cannot break stone walls)
  3. Leave Barley, Cloudberries or Flax inside the pen and close the gate
  4. Wait — taming takes a while as the Lox eats through several meals
  5. Once tamed, it will follow you and fight alongside you

Lox drops (wild kill)

Lox Meat (used to make Lox Meat Pie, 75 health + 24 stamina), Lox Hide, Lox Trophy (rare).

Riding a Lox

To ride, craft a Lox Saddle at a Workbench (10 Leather Scraps + 20 Linen Thread + 15 Black Metal). Attach it to a tamed Lox to ride. You cannot attack while mounted, but holding Shift makes the Lox charge, trampling anything in its path.

Yagluth — the progression gate

Yagluth’s altar is always inside a Plains zone. Look for a circle of stone pillars with a fire rune symbol. It is usually near several Fuling Villages — clear those villages first or you will fight Yagluth with Fulings spawning behind you.

How to summon

Place 5 Fuling Totems on the Offer Stones. Fuling Totems drop from Fuling Berserkers (10% rate each). Kill ~50 Berserkers across multiple villages and you have enough.

Yagluth mechanics

  • Fire breath: wide cone that sets you on fire. Dodge sideways, or drink Barley Wine for fire resistance.
  • Ground slam: AOE shockwave that knocks you back. Jump over it or run away before it lands.
  • Summons Fulings: Every time it loses health, 2-3 Fulings spawn. Clear them quickly before resuming the boss.
  • Frostner is ideal here — frost slow on Yagluth, spirit damage bypasses fire resist.

Root Harnesk + Black Metal Armor legs/helmet + Frostner + Black Metal Shield + Bow with frost arrows. Three foods eaten. Fire Barley Wine before entering the fight.

Drops: Torn Spirit + Yagluth Trophy + Forsaken Power

Torn Spirit — the single most important drop in the Plains. Unlocks:

  • Wisp Fountain (10 Stone + 1 Torn Spirit at a Stonecutter) — catch Wisps at night for Mistlands Wisplight
  • Porcupine (Forge lvl 4: 5 Fine Wood + 20 Iron + 5 Needle + 10 Linen Thread) — the strongest one-handed mace in the game; recipe unlocks when you have the materials
  • Iron Sledge (Forge lvl 2: 10 Ancient Bark + 30 Iron + 4 Ymir Flesh + 1 Draugr Elite Trophy) — two-handed AOE hammer

Yagluth Forsaken Power50% lightning resistance, +25 Farming and +10% damage. Useful for Ashlands later, less so for Mistlands.

Before you leave the Plains

  1. Black Metal gear fully crafted — Black Metal Armor + Black Metal Sword/Shield + Black Metal Pickaxe
  2. Torn Spirit in inventory — needed for Wisp Fountain
  3. Wisp Fountain built at home base — you will catch Wisps here for Mistlands
  4. 5+ Fuling Totems stocked — keep spares in your Plains outpost chest
  5. Barley seeds farmed — plant them in Plains base for sustainable Barley Wine
  6. Lox Meat Pie available — the best food for Mistlands

The six mistakes that get you stuck in the Plains

1. No Root Harnesk

Deathsquitos hit 90 pierce damage. Root Harnesk makes that 0-5. Without it, you are one-shot.

2. Running into Fuling Villages blind

Clear the Shaman first. Pull Fulings one at a time. Do not charge the gate with 8 Fulings waiting.

3. Trying to portal with Black Metal scrap

Black Metal scrap blocks portals. Walk to your Longship every time.

4. No Moder Forsaken Power for sailing

Moder’s power gives +300 carry weight, a tailwind while sailing (it lasts 300 seconds), and 50% frost resistance. Without it, hauling enough scrap home in one trip is much harder.

5. Forgetting that Barley/Flax only grows in Plains

You took seeds home to your Meadows base? They will not grow. Plant them in the Plains.

6. Fighting Yagluth without clearing nearby villages

Yagluth summons Fulings during the fight. If there are already Fulings spawning from a nearby village, you will be fighting 10 enemies at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop Deathsquitos from one-shotting me?
Two ways. First: wear the Root Harnesk — this Swamp-tier chest piece grants pierce resistance that completely neutralizes Deathsquito damage. Second: keep moving and swing at the air around you. Deathsquitos fly in a straight line at you — a sword swing as they approach kills them instantly. Standing still = getting stung = 90 pierce damage = instant death on Iron Armor or below.
How much Black Metal do I need for a full set?
Black Metal Armor set (3 pieces) + Black Metal Sword + Black Metal Shield + Black Metal Pickaxe = about 20 Black Metal ingots. Each regular Fuling drops 1 Black Metal scrap; each Fuling Berserker drops 3-5. You need 2 scrap → 1 ingot, so about 40 scrap minimum. Clear 2-3 Fuling Villages and you have enough.
Can I grow Barley and Flax anywhere?
No. Barley and Flax seeds only grow on Plains grass. You can plant them anywhere in the Plains biome — including your base if it is in the Plains — but they will not grow in any other biome. Plant them with a cultivator (needs Iron) and water them with rain or a watering can.
How do I summon Yagluth?
Bring 5 Fuling Totems to the Yagluth stone circle. Fuling Totems drop from Fuling Berserkers (10% drop rate each). You need 5 total — kill 50 or so Fuling Berserkers across multiple Fuling Villages and you will get enough. The altar is always inside a Plains zone, so clear any nearby Fuling villages first before summoning.
